What Cutefish sends, and to whom.
Cutefish has no accounts, telemetry, analytics or crash reporting. This page lists every time the system, our downloads and this website reach the network.
The system
Cutefish's desktop and apps don't connect to the internet on their own. The exceptions are things you set up or open yourself.
- Calendar
- If you subscribe to a calendar, Calendar downloads it from the address you gave, then again about once a day, or as often as the calendar asks, between hourly and weekly. Public holiday calendars come from Apple's iCloud servers; the address names the region and language you picked.
- Things you open
- Video Player opening a web address, Files connecting to a server, and links in an app's About window, which open in your browser.
- Agents
- An agent you allow to use the computer reaches the screen through cutefish-computer-use, which never connects to the network. Cutefish asks you first and shows a Stop button while the agent works. What the agent app does with what it sees is up to that app and its service.
- Night Light
- Works out sunrise and sunset from your time zone, not your location.
The Debian base
Cutefish is built on Debian, and a few of its parts reach the network in Debian's usual way.
- Clock
- Set from Debian's time servers. You can turn this off with Auto sync in Settings, under Date & Time.
- Local network
- The computer announces its name on your local network so other devices can find it. This stays on your network.
- Updates
- Software is only updated when you choose to, from Debian's servers and download.cutefish.org. Nothing updates on its own.
- Chromium
- The included web browser contacts Google services, as Chromium does.
- Mac apps
- Apps you run through Reef do what they do on a Mac, including any update checks or syncing of their own.
Downloads
download.cutefish.org is served by Cloudflare, which sees your IP address when you download, as any web server would.
This website
These pages use no cookies, analytics or tracking scripts, and load nothing from other sites. They're hosted on GitHub Pages, which sees your IP address when serving them. Links to GitHub, X and Discord take you to those services, under their own privacy policies.
